II. GENERAL ACADEMIC SECRETARIAT

Good governance and quality assurance in the service of academic life at the University of Kinshasa

“Working closely with all partners to find answers together to the problems plaguing the University of Kinshasa…” Said Professor BANZA NSOMWE A NFUNKWA EUSTACHE, Academic Secretary General of the University of Kinshasa.

Under the banner of excellence, good governance and the relevance of teaching, the 2016-2017 academic year effectively began on October 20, 2016 after the official opening five days earlier and ended on July 31, 2017. The 2016-2017 academic year was conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of Academic Instruction No. 018 of October 6, 2016 from the Minister of Higher and University Education.

The Academic Secretary General, Professor BANZA NSOMWE A NFUNKWA EUSTACHE, who, at the opening of the 2016-2017 academic year, promised to invite the Deans of Faculties to do everything possible to complete the courses by June 29, 2017 in order to close the academic year on July 31, 2017, kept his word. Your magazine tells you, in these columns, how Prof. MUSAO, affectionately called ''Mwalimu'' by his peers and ''Boyka'' by the students, he managed to achieve his goals.

Closing the academic year on time is clearly the most eloquent meaning of the fulfillment of the promise made upon the entry into office of the new Academic Secretary General, Professor BANZA NSOMWE A NFUNKWA EUSTACHE.

Enough with the comments, let us instead read in these lines the highlights of the 2016-2017 academic governance as executed by the Academic Secretary General.

The success of the 2016-2017 year was based on the respect for the academic calendar. Look, from the opening of the academic year, the College of Deans was made aware of the need to encourage teachers to research and practice good academic governance. Being much closer to the sector's stakeholders to relaunch research... working in close collaboration with all partners in order to find answers together to the problems that are eating away at the University of Kinshasa. »

To do this, the strict adherence to study programs and research, as well as the flawless application of regulatory criteria for evaluating the work of students, learners and doctoral students, will have been the guarantee of the quality of teaching and research in our Faculties. We must therefore commend the involvement of academic, scientific and administrative staff in the achievement of this second pillar.

About the scientific research, the academic sector has ensured the influence of the University of Kinshasa through the participation of its eminent researchers in colloquiums, scientific workshops and conferences at the national and international level and whose work results are presented in national and international journals, but also through the defense of 39 doctoral theses and 41 Advanced or Higher Studies Memoirs during the academic year 2016-2017.

Scientific research has been made possible thanks to the support of 42 Research Centers with a significant documentary fund that they make available to researchers and 60 modern and well-equipped Laboratories located in the 12 Faculties of the University of Kinshasa. These research machines are accompanied by the Faculty Libraries overseen by the University Library stocked with a documentary fund culminating in almost more than 250,000 volumes of works.

To undertake this research and ensure teaching, the Academic Secretary General has worked to make the lists of staff (academic, scientific and administrative, but especially students) more reliable. mastery of statistics of academic and scientific personnel  remains the hobbyhorse of the new management committee which is part of the logic of academic succession with a view to rejuvenating the staff.

The 2016-2017 academic year was particularly painful for the University of Kinshasa, which recorded the deaths of 12 members of its academic and scientific staff. This means that not everything was rosy during the 2016-2017 academic year. The academic sector encountered difficulties that hampered the execution of the academic calendar in some faculties, with a lack of lecture halls, a very unique context that caused delays, especially in the new departments.

The delays in reviewing students' complaints about the deliberations are also deplorable. Are the Jury Members and Deans of Faculties solely responsible for this situation? Thus, it must be said, scrupulously and faithfully respecting the official deadlines for the transmission of results leads to the establishment of academic documents. It goes without saying that the Academic Secretary General, Professor BANZA NSOMWE A NFUNKWA EUSTACHE, is committed to respecting deadlines in order to facilitate the proper management of academic calendar deadlines and the transmission of results to the hierarchy for disposition. We will come back to this!

The Academic Secretary General is appointed by the Minister of Higher and University Education and Scientific Research from among the members of the University's academic staff for a renewable four-year term.
