Professor Muyembe honored on the continent

Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe received this Friday, along with Professor Salim Abdool Karim (South Africa), Director of CAPRISA, the "CPHIA 2021" Excellence Award, awarded by the African Union and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for their lifetime achievements in the field of public health.

This award recognizes their contribution to science, research and development in Africa.

The award was received following a selection process conducted by 140 African policymakers, scientists, public health experts, data experts, and civil society representatives who participated in the first International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA 2021), held virtually from December 14 to 16.

The conference focused on long-term health challenges, including vaccine inequality and weak health systems.

Virologist Jean-Jacques Muyembe (79 years old) is notably known for being one of the co-discoverers of the Ebola virus in 1976.

He is the Director General of the National Institute for Biomedical Research, INRB.

Professor Muyembe's career has been crowned with numerous awards, such as the prestigious Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize (photo), which was awarded to him in Tokyo in 2019.

Salim Safurdeen Abdool Karim is a specialist in public health medicine, epidemiologist and infectious diseases.

He is the Vice-President of the International Scientific Council.
