The Mgr Luc Gillon promotion room at the University of Kinshasa was the setting, on Thursday, March 31, 2022, for a conference organized by the School of Criminology on “Justice in transition and challenges of restitution of human bodies". This involved rethinking the colonial categories of human remains collections within the framework of the project. Human Remains Origins Multidisciplinary Evaluation (HOME).
The main speaker, Mrs. Lies Busselen, is a researcher in the department Royal Heritage Museum from Central Africa (MRAC). She was accompanied by:
- Professor Placide Mumbembele Sanger from the University of Kinshasa and the Institute of National Museums of Congo (IMNC).
- Mr. Stéphane Kabila And Mr. Patrick Mudekereza from the Waza Art Center in Lubumbashi.
- Mr. Noah Matanga And Mr. Paul Shemisi from the Collective Faire-Part of Kinshasa.
Moderation was provided by Professor Sara Liwerant, Deputy Director of the School of Criminology in charge of Research and CCPS (Center for Criminology and Social Pathology) at the University of Kinshasa.
In his opening remarks, the Rector of Unikin, Professor Jean-Marie Kayembe Ntumba welcomed the holding of this conference, which is part of a series of major conferences that Unikin organizes to make contributions to societal problems. This conference is part of the need to rewrite history through the restitution of human bodies and works of art. The resolutions of this conference are expected to allow the Unikin Management Committee to continue its advocacy and regain its place in the concert of major universities in Africa and the world.
This conference, organized in person and online, allowed Congolese and Belgian scientists to enrich this HOME project on restitution and transitional justice.
