Mukwege, medicine, …. And long live Research!
The week of May 2-8, 2022 (Week 18; 2022) will remain etched in the annals of our alma mater.
She has breathed, and will continue to breathe, for a long time to come, the air of the Nobel Prize at Unikin. Just think for a second that having been awarded a Nobel Peace Prize (2018), along with the Sakarhov Prize (2014) and countless other recognitions around the world, including more than a dozen Doctor Honoris Causa decorations, on the inspired hillside, could have seemed like an illusion, a dream. But no, we are not dreaming, we have just experienced it, life-size, as some would say, in real life. Professor Dr. Denis Mukwege, “The Man Who Repairs Women,” in the flesh and in all his splendor, was there, at Unikin.
Monday, May 2nd, he was welcomed at NODASA Square, then escorted by a procession to the forecourt of the Administrative Building, where a guard of honor filled with applause worthy of a high Honorary Citizen of the world awaited him. The Management Committee, led by the Rector, was there in full force, in the midst of a cosmopolitan and highly intelligent crowd. Mukwege did not hide his pleasant surprise at the exhibition, still ongoing, in honor of the women professors of the University of Kinshasa. Then, place in the large conference room; the atmosphere there was simply unprecedented, indescribable, full of symbolism! Add to this the presence of our Planetary Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum and we could afford to dream, with our eyes open. God loves the DR Congo, and the Congolese are… magical. He must convince himself of this and take his destiny into his own hands.
Our Nobel Peace Prize worked on rape as a weapon of warMany in the room had trouble containing their tears... This son of Unikin, who spent two years at the polytechnic before turning to Medicine, did not hide his great satisfaction at returning home and publicly expressed his wish to see the development of several research areas between the Panzi Hospital, which he directs, and his beloved university. An appeal to which Mr. Rector, Professor Jean-Marie Kayembe, naturally responded positively. There is no doubt that the stars are gradually aligning for our university and for the renewal of our Research.
Tuesday, May 3, 2022, Mukwege did it again, this time in the Monekoso room, Faculty of Medicine, in front of Experts, Teachers, Doctors, Students, Lawyers interested in the cause, etc. The subject was more technical: Management of post-traumatic genitourinary and genitourinary-digestive fistulas (particularly post-rape) ; but the atmosphere was still suspended in indescribable admiration. We had a Nobel Prize winner before us! We knew he was taking off again that same evening and was heading to Bayonne, France. He was decorated there the next day, "First Honorary Citizen of the City." There are no words to describe the pride that this son of the country gives to all Congolese. It was really time that our country, that our academic world, paid him all the honors!
The rest of the week saw the defense of five theses, four of which were directly or indirectly linked to medicine.
It is therefore perfectly normal and logical that the team of experts at the SGR mentioned, on Wednesday, May 4, the messages from several global ranking institutions that confirm substantial tremors concerning research at the University of Kinshasa, the only institution cited for the country. The top of our university is showing its face and is beginning to reappear on the rankings' radars! We savor this beginning of recognition, but let's remain modest and keep up the pace; our collective efforts can only end up paying off.
Wednesday, May 4th, We should also point out a first meeting of experts, extended to the VDRSA, on the Development plan for the 145 territories, contributions from Unikin.
