Project for a hospital to treat infectious diseases dedicated to Dr. Muyembe (Minister of Health)
A hospital for the treatment of infectious diseases will be built in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in honor of Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum, the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention, Dr. Roger Samuel Kamba, announced Friday in Geneva.
" The last 75 years in the DRC have been marked by the occurrence of epidemics, numerous health emergencies and the resurgence of endemic diseases that were once controlled. This is particularly true of the Ebola virus disease, for which Professor Muyembe almost sacrificed his entire career to contribute to the protection, prevention and treatment of this disease. Thus, a hospital for the treatment of infectious diseases will be built in his name. " said Dr. Kamba, during the 76th World Health Assembly, which is being held from 21 to 31 May 2023 in Geneva, under the theme " 75 years of WHO, saving lives and promoting health for all ".
Dr. Kamba also thanked the organization for honoring Professor Muyembe in the "Global Health Leaders Award" category in light of his commitment to the sector.
He said that despite the wars in the DRC, the government is committed to implementing the necessary reforms to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, including universal health coverage (UHC).
The CSU, he explained, is a legal framework and a necessary instrument for subsidizing prenatal, postnatal and delivery care, starting with the city-province of Kinshasa and this will gradually extend to other provinces in order to save the lives of pregnant women and children.
Within the framework of the WHO, the DRC will always stand alongside other nations to combat multiple health scourges while ensuring the resilience of the health system, concluded the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention.
