Summary

The massive and brutal shock produced by the coronavirus pandemic and the measures taken to stop activities to stop it, most of the major powers affected have implemented a policy of confinement of their population, thus causing the shutdown of the global economy, trade and, by extension, the paralysis of African economies including that of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The world facing an unprecedented health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the DRC, which has more than 90 million inhabitants and more than 500,000 refugees from neighboring countries, recorded the first confirmed case in Kinshasa on March 10, 2020. As of February 23, 2023, the country has 95,646 cases of contamination and 1,464 deaths. The DRC, after recording its first case, took health protection measures; However, it too finds itself in a worrying economic situation, which was immediately noticeable by the increase in the foreign currency (the dollar) against the local currency. From an extroverted economy, the Covid-19 pandemic has made it stagnant; which could lead the country into an economic recession if this scourge persists. The DRC's economy has been hit hard because it is characterized by a heavy dependence on global trade, commodity exports, and external financing. This economy suffers from vulnerabilities that are accentuated by this exogenous shock and must take courageous political measures to face future crises of the same nature.
