The Secretary General for Research, Professor Marie-Claire Yandju, received a delegation of plant production specialists

As part of the partnership between the University of Kinshasa and the University of Maryland, the Secretary General for Research, Professor Marie-Claire Yandju, received a delegation of plant production specialists.

The objective of this mission was to transfer skills in irrigation, intensification, and permanent vegetable production. A batch of irrigation equipment was provided to support the demonstration training provided.

The irrigation system consists of a pump, a water tank, a main hose, watering connectors, watering hoses, and a plastic growing bed. The plastic tarpaulin has a lifespan of 10 years, and the PVC can be reused several times.

The advantage of this system is to produce several times with a single sowing, smother weeds and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.

For the demonstrations, a market garden area was set up on the plowed land

The Station's technical and manual staff were trained in the operating principles, installation techniques and maintenance of irrigation infrastructure.

To facilitate the control of crop pests, two microscopes were donated to the Entomology Unit of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the Applied Microbiology Unit of the Faculty of Sciences.

The meeting has been set for Wednesday, May 29, 2024 for the continuation and end of this first phase of technology transfer.

This activity is in line with the recovery of compost produced by recycling waste from the University's sanitation system. It creates added value and encourages the diversification of income sources.
