The University of Kinshasa offers solutions to combat traffic jams

Kinshasa, November 5, 2024, Faced with the growing problem of traffic jams, the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN) is committed to finding sustainable solutions. During a press briefing held in the Academic Senate room of Monseigneur Maurice Plevoet at the Inspired Hill, Rector Jean-Marie KAYEMBE NTUMBA unveiled the results of a study conducted by researcher Delphin MWADI, identifying six main causes: structural problems linked to topography, population growth, uncontrolled urban expansion, road degradation, the increase in the number of vehicles and user behavior. The consequences of these traffic jams are significant: loss of time, major economic impact, and rising transport prices.
To address this, UNIKIN proposes short-term solutions, such as developing parking lots, banning parking at unofficial stops, and improving street lighting. In the long term, investments in road infrastructure, the development of public transport, and the application of advanced technologies for traffic management are envisaged.

General MULAND NAWEJ Godefroid, Commander of the Kinshasa War College, also spoke, calling for the full involvement of the University of Kinshasa in implementing the recommendations. He emphasized the importance of an integrated approach that mobilizes all available skills to make Kinshasa a more fluid and pleasant place to live.
In addition, Engineer Fidèle NSADI presented innovative detection software using Artificial Intelligence. This software would be able to monitor and control any vehicle likely to create pseudo-traffic jams, thus facilitating more responsive traffic management.
