Professor Selain Kasereka Presents Groundbreaking Research in Artificial Intelligence at Sofia Technical University
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming scientific research and innovation, opening up new perspectives in various fields. With this in mind, the Technical University of Sofia (TU-Sofia) organized its annual scientific conference from May 22 to 23, 2025, at the Sankt Peterburg Park Hotel, Plovdiv, Bulgaria, bringing together renowned researchers from around the world as part of the project “Improving research capacity and quality for international recognition and sustainability of TU-Sofia.”
Among the participants was Associate Professor Selain Kasereka, a Congolese researcher at the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN), and the only African representative at the event. A specialist in applied mathematics and artificial intelligence, he presented three major research projects with far-reaching implications:
- Mathematical modeling of the spread of epidemics
In this innovative study, Professor Kasereka proposes a model that integrates the dynamics of individuals practicing self-medication. This model offers tools to predict hospitalization rates, improve hospital infrastructure management, and guide health policies toward better patient care.
- Using artificial intelligence to optimize differential equation modeling
Differential equations play a key role in analyzing disease spread. However, their effectiveness depends on the accuracy of the parameters used, which are often difficult to estimate. Professor Kasereka demonstrates here that machine learning can refine these parameters using real-world data, thus improving the quality of forecasts and understanding of epidemiological dynamics.
- BabaSpeech: Translation from sign language to Lingala using deep learning
This project, developed in collaboration with his team, offers an innovative solution to improve accessibility for deaf and mute people in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries. Thanks to a combination of the EfficientNet-B3 architecture and the LSTM model, BabaSpeech translates sign language into Lingala text and speech in real time, achieving an accuracy of 91 %. This breakthrough paves the way for greater social and educational inclusion for these communities.
The University of Kinshasa called upon to follow suit
Professor Kasereka's participation in this event demonstrates that Africa, and the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN) in particular, possesses immense potential for research and innovation. Given the major advances in artificial intelligence and the opportunities they offer, it is imperative that UNIKIN strengthen its efforts to integrate AI into its academic programs and research projects. This involves:
- The establishment of international partnerships with pioneering institutions in AI.
- Increased funding for artificial intelligence research.
- The development of specialized training for students and researchers.
- The creation of AI research centers, promoting technological innovation and its application to local issues.
A Gala to Close the Conference
Following the rich scientific exchanges, a gala dinner was held, showcasing Bulgarian gastronomy and culture. Participants had the opportunity to discover traditional Bulgarian dishes and enjoy Bulgarian folk dances. This festive occasion strengthened ties between researchers from diverse backgrounds, consolidating a dynamic of international collaboration that promises to bear fruit in the years to come.
By organizing this event, Sofia Technical University confirms its commitment to strengthening the impact of science and innovation on global issues by highlighting researchers who push the boundaries of knowledge.
