<p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);"><i>Context and objective. </i>Hospital effluent</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">management is a real challenge in sub-Saharan</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">Africa. The objective of the present study was</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">to evaluate the treatment of hospital effluents</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">using the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">(UASB) pilot reactor. <i>Methods</i>. The main</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">material of the study was the hospital effluents</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">from the Kinshasa University Hospital.</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">Pumpkin seed oil (<i>Curcubita pepo</i>) was used as</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">an adjuvant reagent. Hospital effluents were</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">characterized before their run through the</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">UASB pilot reactor. <i>Results</i>. A significant</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">reduction of various parameters of the pollutant</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">load was obtained after 7-month treatment of</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">Hospital effluents in the UASB pilot reactor</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">with the following yields: 98.4 % for Chemical</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">Oxygen Demand (COD), 98.1 % for Biological</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">Oxygen Demand (BOD), 97.5 % for Total</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">Suspended Solids (TSS), 98.5 % for turbidity</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">and 95.8 % for ammonium. Nitrites dropped</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">significantly to 89.1 % and nitrates to 84.6 %.</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">Total phosphorus gave a yield of 90.3 %, total</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">nitrogen of 82 %. Fecal coliforms and</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">streptococci had yields of 92 % and 86.3 %,</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">respectively. <i>Conclusion. </i>The data presented</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">here show the effectiveness of the UASB pilot</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">reactor in treating hospital effluents from the</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">Kinshasa University Hospital. They could</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">constitute a basis for future large scale studies</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">of hospital effluent treatment using the UASB</span></p><p><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);">reactor</span></p>
