Launch of the literary café at UNIKIN

A new lease of life for literature at the University of Kinshasa!
On March 28, 2025, on the occasion of the 113th anniversary of the birth of Léon Gontran Damas, the Cercle des Hommes des Lettres (CERHOL) officially launched its Literary Café, under the patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences. This event, which marks a significant step forward in the promotion of reading and literary criticism, brought together students, teachers, writers, and literature enthusiasts.
This first literary event was dedicated to exploring the poetry of Léon-Gontran Damas under the guidance of Professor Bertin Makolo, an emblematic figure of the Negritude movement. Through readings, analyses, and discussions, participants revisited the impact of his work on African literature and identity.
The Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, Professor Eugène BITENDE, accompanied by the Vice-Dean in charge of research, Professor Philomène Babongisila, honored the event with his presence and welcomed the CERHOL initiative, emphasizing the importance of such frameworks in the intellectual and cultural training of students.
For Séraphin MIKOBI, Coordinator of the Cercle des Hommes des Lettres, the Literary Café is intended as a space for dialogue and the promotion of African literature, where each month, a work, an author, or a literary movement will be honored. The goal is to encourage critical reading, writing, and public speaking, while promoting emerging literary talent.
The Cercle des Hommes des Lettres invites all students and lovers of literature to take part in the next editions of this Literary Café, an unmissable event to enrich our minds and celebrate together the power of words and says thank you to Professor Bertin MAKOLO and other writers who enriched the debate.
Long live literature! Long live the Literary Café!
