International Water Day
2022-04-02 9:20International Water Day
A day of reflection and awareness around the theme: "groundwater, make visible what is invisible" was organized as part of the International Water Day. The presence of the Rector of the University of Kinshasa was noted, Professor Jean-Marie Kayembe Ntumba came to accompany Professor Céline Sikulisimwa of the Faculty of Sciences, keynote speaker at this conference. She explored the issue of the alarming state of the rivers in the city-province of Kinshasa while proposing some possible solutions. This support from the University of Kinshasa stipulates that this Alma Mater has a role to play as a breeding ground for scientists. It must propose appropriate strategies to our leaders so that our environment, our living environment, is healthy.
Thus, this conference saw the participation of other speakers such as:
- Al Kitenge who addressed the economic aspect of this waste which can generate revenue for the public treasury.
- Professor Josephine Ntumba who noted in his presentation that the population is in some way responsible for its living environment (Eco-responsibility).
Professor Céline Sikulisimwa called on the population to stop turning rivers into dumpsites. This call is part of its awareness campaign "SOS river" for the safeguarding and protection of rivers against all activities that could pollute them.
She also noted that rivers, which are surface waters, are in contact with groundwater since rivers feed into aquifers. If rivers are polluted, they will have difficulty properly replenishing aquifers.
The Special Advisor to the Head of State on Universal Health Coverage was represented at these meetings by the Technical Advisor Dr. Roger Kamba while the Governor of the city-province of Kinshasa was represented by his Advisor in charge of the environment and sustainable development, Marie-Paul Lusamba.
