General presentation

Founded in 1956, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kinshasa (UNIKIN) is one of the oldest medical institutions in Central Africa. With over 60 years of experience, it is a center of excellence in training, research, and healthcare, serving the Congolese and African populations.

Vision & Mission

  • Vision : To be a center of excellence that shines on a national, African and global scale, in terms of teaching, research and care.

  • Values: Integrity, creativity, openness, excellence.

  • Fundamental missions:

    • Train competent health professionals,

    • Produce research useful to society,

    • Providing quality care to the community.

Human Resources

  • Teachers: 632 in total, including 249 academics and 383 scientists.

  • Students: 3,723 registered in 2024-2025.

  • Ratio: 1 teacher for 6 students (compared to 1/24 in 2016).

  • Administrative, technical and manual staff: 37 permanent staff + decentralized staff.

Infrastructure

  • Educational: 26 rooms spread over 4 sites (Central Building, CUK, ESP, CNPP), specialized laboratories.

  • Administrative: Unsuitable for current needs, obsolescence noted.

  • Library : 4,507 books, modern virtual library, branch libraries in hospitals.

Research and specialization (3rd cycle)

  • Organized around the Faculty Office under the coordination of VDRSA.

  • Two ways:

    • Master/DEA/DES in Basic Sciences,

    • Clinical specialization (General Medicine and Public Health).

  • Goals : strengthen clinical, academic and scientific skills.

Training courses offered

1. Biomedical course (7 years)

  • 3 years of bachelor's degree + 4 years of master's degree + internship

  • Degree: Doctor of Medicine

2. Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (5 years)

  • Bachelor + Master (kinesiology or physiotherapy option)

  • Degree: Bachelor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Healthcare governance

  • Partner hospital structures:

    • Kinshasa University Clinics (CUK) – 648 operational beds

    • Neuro-Psycho-Pathological Center (CNPP)

    • Mont Amba Hospital Center (CHMA)

  • Cutting-edge specialties, clinical research centers and modern equipment.

Laboratories & specialized centers

More than 30 reference laboratories covering all medical fields: anatomy, biology, imaging, surgery, resuscitation, pediatrics, internal medicine, etc.

Publications & outreach

  • Scientific review: African Annals of Medicine, quarterly.

  • International opening: partnership with foreign institutions, specialized training abroad.
