Technological innovation in the DRC: industrial property titles awarded to Congolese inventors

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), through the Minister of Industry and Scientific Research, presented industrial property titles to young Congolese people in Kinshasa on Thursday, who have distinguished themselves in their professional fields by bringing technological innovations that meet the vital needs of the population, during the official patent award ceremony.

Today's ceremony is rich in symbolism, as it is part of the vision of the President of the Republic, who is keen to encourage Congolese youth because of their dynamism and genius for creativity. It is an honor to support this ingenuity, because it helps meet the vital needs of the population by creating jobs and, above all, wealth. ", declared Louis Watum Kabamba, Minister of Industry and SME-SMI Development. According to the Minister of Industry, the industrial property title refers to a set of rights related to the protection of innovation and creation in the industrial sector. It mainly includes patents that protect technical innovations for a period, generally 20 years.

Louis Watum pointed out that neoclassical economic theory attributed the growth of production to an increase in the factors of production, namely capital and labor. To this end, recent studies and experiments show that the share of raw materials, making many labor gains, whose overall costs have decreased, and these factors allow products to increasingly differentiate themselves on the market.

He also said that for most new products, the added value comes mainly from intangible elements, including technology. It is now clear that innovation and creativity enable companies and countries to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. Per capita economic growth in countries is increasingly driven by innovation, rather than by the volume of investment itself, hence the growing role of intellectual property rights. " he added.

Thanks to intellectual capital, said Minister Watum, many leading companies occupy dominant market positions and are consistently profitable. The Minister of Industry emphasized that companies are increasingly aware that ensuring dynamic and in-depth mastery of technologies, as well as new products and processes, is the best way to stand out in the market.

Innovation and creativity promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization

Furthermore, the Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation, Gilbert Kabanda Kurhenga, for his part, announced that this Thursday's ceremony aims to promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization through scientific research and technological innovation based on the real need for the development of our country in various fields.

I thank the Head of State, Félix Tshisekedi, for the invaluable support he continues to provide us to make scientific research and technological innovation an instrument of introversion and diversification of the national economy and of strengthening the productive capacity of our economy. " he argued.

We have reflected on the problems facing the Congo and have provided appropriate solutions. I believe that by showcasing our innovations, purchasing power will increase and allow the DRC to have technological sovereignty. This merit can only encourage us and make us happy to continue our research and believe in a better future for the DRC. " said Daniel wa Mukina, representative of the Congolese inventories.
