The University of Kinshasa has awarded the prestigious title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Debora KAYEMBE for her remarkable contributions to the promotion of women's educational rights and peacebuilding in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Debora Kayembe, a Doctor of Laws graduate of the University of Edinburgh and Honorary Rector, made history by becoming the first Black woman to hold the position of Rector at the University of Edinburgh, making her only the third woman to hold the position since the university was founded over 400 years ago.
The Doctorate Honoris Causa award ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in the Monekosso Room, presided over by Professor Jean-Marie KAYEMBE NTUMBA, Rector of the University of Kinshasa. In a moving speech, Ms. Débora KAYEMBE shared her inspiring journey and encouraged the students present, particularly by discussing the critical situation in the east of the country and her commitment to Congolese refugees in the United States.
In recognition of his generous contributions, the University of Kinshasa also posthumously appointed Mr. KADIMA, who recently passed away, as Ambassador, for his many contributions to this academic institution.
