Security situation on the university site

On Wednesday, May 25, 2022, the Rector of Unikin, the Professor Jean-Marie Kayembe Ntumba  answered questions from the press to establish public opinion on the security situation on the Unikin campus.

On Monday, May 23, 2022, pockets of tension were observed around the university campus. A few student uprisings resulted in minor incidents, resulting in a few injuries and other damage.

These clashes are said to stem from student demands. The first demand is the so-called increase in academic fees, which have always been 300$, but students were paying at a lower rate than the current one. The Rector clarified that it was not up to the Management Committee to set the rate; rather, it was the implementation of the recommendations of the supervisory authority, the ESU, contained in Circular 023. This rate was set in agreement with students, associations such as APUKIN, ACS, APAT, the Management Committee, and some student leaders.

The second demand is rehousing in student residences. Homes 20 and 30 have not yet been renovated; those that have already been renovated should be equipped and furnished by the government. The Unikin Management Committee is advocating with decision-makers to complete this renovation work and to install the planned facilities. The Management Committee is aware that students face difficult housing conditions, especially those without families in the capital. These new housing units will be subject to efficient management based on digitalization.

The latest official demand is that of the Transacademia buses, a project managed by the Ministry of Transport without the interference of the Management Committee.

"We need peace more than destruction. We also do not want the university environment to be used for political ends," said the Rector.

Students are encouraged to demonstrate greater peace, composure, and conciliation. The doors of the management committee will always be open.

The Management Committee is keen to take part in national reconstruction, particularly through the Head of State's project for the development of the 145 territories.

The student will remain the focus of the Unikin Management Committee.
