FIRST RANKINGS IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KINSHASA …AND THE SHOCK WAVE!
I am writing to you between two sessions of a seminar on Rankings Africa University, which is taking place on September 1 and 2, 2022, in Rabat, organized by the Quacquareli Simmonds Group (QS Rankings Africa), which you will undoubtedly hear about in the future.
The numbers are stark: only 10 African countries consistently appear in the top 2,000 global higher education rankings. These are South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Uganda, Kenya, Cameroon, and Tunisia. The first, South Africa's University of Cape Town, was ranked 109th in "US News and World Report, The 2022 Best Global Universities Rankings (nytv.to/egOrP), while Cameroon's University of Yaoundé I, the only French-speaking country, was ranked 940th.
However, these Rankings provide information on university research performance, the global and regional academic reputation of the institution, the international reputation of the faculties, the student-faculty ratio, citations by faculties, reputation on the employability of trained students, etc.
As the sessions in Rabat progress, I increasingly appreciate the value of the work that has just been accomplished (I weigh my words carefully) at the University of Kinshasa. Indeed, the first rankings of the University of Kinshasa were published on August 30, 2022, almost the day before this seminar. This date will remain etched in the history of our alma mater. These are the first in the country's history to be concocted using an original methodology.
