Excellence Award in Transdisciplinary Research — ARES–UNIKIN
I am pleased to share an important milestone in my journey as a researcher: our team has received the Excellence Award for Transdisciplinary Research Projects at the University of Kinshasa, within the framework of the ARES–UNIKIN Institutional Support Program.

The award-winning project focuses on:
“Towards integrated, smart, and sustainable management of traffic congestion in Kinshasa: spatial diagnosis, urban mobility, and digital innovation through artificial intelligence.”

Our approach stems from a key observation: traffic congestion in Kinshasa is not merely a question of vehicle numbers or infrastructure. It results from the interaction of territorial, demographic, urban, infrastructural, behavioral, and institutional factors.

We therefore chose a transdisciplinary approach combining:
  • Geography and spatial planning
  • Geomatics and GIS
  • Remote sensing and spatial analysis
  • Road and transport engineering
  • Computer science and artificial intelligence
  • Social sciences and urban governance

This approach notably led to the development of Kuris AI, a digital monitoring and decision-support solution based on artificial intelligence and spatial analysis.

The innovation specifically aims to:
  • detect vehicles;
  • count and track traffic flows;
  • identify disruptive traffic situations;
  • analyze their spatial context;
  • generate alerts;
  • contribute to more proactive traffic management.

This distinction serves as an encouragement for us to continue pursuing applied research and technological innovation made in the DRC.
