Floods in the DRC: The Regional Water School of the University of Kinshasa provides some recommendations
“Restitution of preliminary investigations into the current floods in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Status and perspectives”.
This is the topic discussed during the Restitution Workshop which took place this Thursday, January 25, 2023 in the MONEKOSSO Conference Room. After the presentations of Assistant Marcel MBAYO, a DEA Chemistry/Water and Environment student, on the theme: “Quality of flood waters, case of BITSHAKU-TSHAKU” and Mr. Godé BOLA, researcher at the Regional Water School on the theme: “Current state of flood risk prediction in the Congo River Basin”, Then, Professor M. TSHIMANGA, Expert in hydrology and water resources of the Congo Basin and DG of the Regional Water School, presented the results of preliminary investigations on current floods in the DRC.
In his speech, the tenant of the Regional Water School of UNIKIN, proposes an operational action plan for flood management in the DRC, with some recommendations: those of setting up a flood forecasting program and an early warning system; of developing and implementing a Sub-Watershed Management Plan; of identifying areas exposed to flooding; of identifying and mapping recharge zones… In the same logic, the Rector of the inspired hill, Professor Jean-Marie KAYEMBE NTUMBA, head of this activity, recalled the availability of his university establishment to get involved in the problems affecting Congolese society, one of the recognized missions of the university.
It should be noted that this meeting was attended by several decision-making institutions of the country and environmental organizations.
